Position title: Senior Mechanical Designer
Department: Mechanical Design
Numet is looking for a Senior Mechanical Designer familiar with design of specialized tooling, structural assemblies, and pressure retaining equipment. Numet services the Nuclear industry with supply of custom designed systems, structures, and components, and design and engineering services, for both power generation and waste management.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review Tool Design Requirement documents and Technical Specifications to develop concept designs, and to carry concept design through to preliminary and detailed design.
- Perform preliminary engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
- Specify or evaluate appropriate purchased components for mechanical assemblies.
- Review electrical requirements with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.
- Produce concept drawings, detail drawings & bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies or product, using 3D Solid modeling software (preferably Solid Edge).
- Prepare written technical descriptions, reports, and other technical documentation.
- Will periodically supervise the mechanical design effort on a project level delegating tasks to a team of people.
- Responsible for communicating time estimates and resource requirements on design tasks to the design supervisor and project managers.
- Assist the fabricators, machinists, toolmakers and electricians in the debug, integration, and completion of systems.
- Analyze designs and systems for compliance to applicable standards (i.e. OSHA, CSA, ASME) and to referenced customer specifications.
- Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc.
- Will liaison with customers and in-house technical and engineering staff.
- Will liaison with vendors for technical information and specifications.
- Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
SKILLS:
- Proficiency in the use of 3D Solid modeling software (preferably Solid Edge)
- Ability to manage project from concept development through to detailed design.
- Able to interpret and provide feedback on detailed project schedules.
- Knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics use.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of drafting principles and drafting standards.
- A working knowledge of common machine shop techniques, and low volume high quality fabrication principles.
- Knowledge of electrical device uses (i.e. switches, load cells, position transducers, etc.).
- Able to design tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to details, disciplined.
- Self-starter...able to recognize next sequential task.
- Must be capable of working as part of a team.
- Must be capable of taking direction.
- Post Secondary Education in Mechanical Design, Engineering or equivalent.
- A minimum of 8+ years' experience as a Designer.
- Must have excellent written and verbal English communication skills
