Reactor Maintenance Platforms
The Project
To address Ontario Power Generation Inc. requirement to perform a variety of maintenance tasks at the Reactor Face, Numet designed, manufactured and tested a modular system of platforms and shielding allowing personnel to safely access all Reactor Fuel Channels.
The Solution
Numet designed various widths and multiple configurations of platforms to allow access to any part of the reactor face. The platforms are simply rolled into position and attached to an existing elevating bridge system. A shielded canopy, complete with thick steel roof, is installed to aid in the radiation protection of personnel.
To prevent excess loading on the elevating device, aluminum, instead of carbon steel, was used on platforms that do not handle the 4000lb shielded canopy. Fabrication tolerances were critical in order to provide an obstacle free, safe working surface once all platforms are installed.
The perimeter of the assembled platform is enclosed by handrails and access to the platform is gained through safety gates at the stairs. The platforms, handrails and gates meet the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations relevant to the client’s specific location.
To securely hold the platforms to the elevating device, Numet fabricated a custom, robust clamp mechanism, designed specifically for operation by workers in a radiation suit environment.
The support system is seismically qualified in order to satisfy requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Engineering analysis included finite element analysis, seismic analysis, accident analysis and a radiation safety review.
