Cable Penetrations
The Project
Reactor containment vaults, including the electrical and mechanical connections through them, are designed for pressure containment. Custom inspection or maintenance processes using powered or remote controlled equipment frequently require custom penetration assemblies to allow high voltage, power, control and closed circuit television cables to be routed into the reactor vault containment area.

The Solution
Numet’s typical assemblies are made of carbon steel or stainless steel weldments with glands through which the cables pass. Within the glands the cables are potted in epoxy for sealing and electrical insulation. A gland nut holds the assemblies together. Capsules are provided with dual seals for continuous integrity monitoring. Each potted assembly is helium leak tested before installation. The capsules are designed for power, control, signal, coax and fiber optics, to meet the accident conditions specified in IEEE 317. Conductor densities in each capsule is dictated by thermal (power capsules) and spatial constraint. Termination plates are provided for easy installation and capsule internals are replaceable for future flexibility. The penetrations are nuclear pressure boundary components designed to be inserted into existing airlock ports in vault containment walls.
Numet has provided penetrations from 1 ½” to 48” in diameter in a variety of formats.
