Worktable Tool Delivery System

The Project

Re-tubing refurbishment of a CANDU reactor core involves a multitude of tasks including cutting, welding, grinding, cleaning and a variety of component handling and placement activities. The tooling required for these activities present a wide range of demands with regard to placement accuracies and support. To complement Numet’s supply of its Retubing Tool Carriers (RTC’s), Numet provided these remote controlled powered Worktable Tool Delivery Systems that operate at the reactor face and work in conjunction with this tooling through all stages of the re-tubing operation.

The Solution

The “Worktable” Tool Delivery System is a 5-axes, powered platform. Two such platforms are installed in a shielding enclosure that can traverse up and down the face of the reactor. The platforms are mounted on rails inside the enclosure, such that they can travel horizontally across the face of the reactor. Elevation of the enclosure gives each platform access to all rows on the reactor face, and both platforms are capable of accessing any channel site in a given row. Tools mounted on the platforms access the channel sites through sliding doors in the shielding enclosure.

Primary and backup modes of operation are employed with duplicate redundant drives on the major axes. Control of the system is accomplished locally through a pendant control or remotely from a console located in a Control Center outside of the containment vault. Motion and position can also be controlled by some of the tools when mounted on the platform.

Supply of the “Worktable” included a complex mock-up that simulated all operating and design conditions to be imposed on the Worktable by the associated tooling.
