Solid/Liquid Separation System

The Project

A variety of processes have been developed as part of a treatment program for radioactive waste stored in underground tanks at US DOE facilities. Following some bench scale testing, performed by the DOE, to demonstrate the effectiveness of a cross flow filtration process, Numet developed and supplied a full-scale automated system to treat supernatant feed at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratories facility.

The Solution
Numet's custom cross-flow filtration system measures 20' long by 10' wide, is 12' high, and weighs 98 000 lbs.

The cross-flow filtration system includes an automated impulse backwash system and a chemical clean sequence.

Not shown above, are the steel skins that enclose the structure for outside installation. The enclosure is insulated and heated, and also serves as a splash guard during operation.

The entire system is regulated by an on-board computer based control system programmed for remote, fully automatic, operation. Manual control mode is provided for all primary operations. Instrumentation is provided to monitor pressure and temperature levels as well as process flow rates. Cameras are installed for remote viewing of equipment operation.

Engineering work consisted of pressure vessel design, component specification, process piping analysis, structural analysis, wind loading calculations, and determination of radiation shielding requirements.

Fabrication of the skid, vessels, piping, shielding and enclosure was completed by Numet, at Numet's facilities.
