ION Exchange Columns
The Project
Numet has supplied hundreds of Ion Exchange Vessels in diameters ranging from 10 to 72 inches, for both Military and Nuclear applications. The ION Exchange Columns are used in water purification systems and are designed to remove ions from process streams through ion exchange in a resin bed.
Despite the vessel’s size or application, the principle is the same; the ion exchange column is designed to permit ion exchange between the resin bed, and a water stream that is uniformly directed through the resin.
The Solution
In order to reduce the likelihood of flow channeling, and loss of resin efficiency, Numet provides custom manifold systems that distribute the downward flow over the entire cross-section of the column.
Depicted above left is a portable military style IX column used as aircraft ground support equipment. They are 10” in diameter and are lightweight for manual handling. They have easily removable heads and contain a removable internal distribution system.
Above right are 6 ft diameter nuclear type IX columns. They are designed for removal of cobalt 60 from the process piping of a CANDU reactor to reduce the radiation fields for maintenance workers during reactor refurbishment.
