Heat Exchangers
The Project
There are many standard type heat exchanger designs that are well proven and provide efficient and economical solutions to most project needs. The design of this unique heat exchanger, however, was in response to one of those applications where pre-existing infrastructure dictates the size and shape of the equipment to be provided. Custom heat exchangers is Numet's specialty. Numet has provided these types of exchangers to nuclear generating stations in Korea and China, and it has also proved to be the ideal solution for a waste vitrification project at the US DOE's Hanford facility.
The Solution
The version of this heat exchanger type shown above has ten coils of tubing. UHMW polyethylene baffles separate the coils and direct the shell side flow from one coil loop to another. The center pipe doubles as both a structural support for the tube-sheets and a return passage for the shell side flow. The tube side flow originates and terminates in manifolds built into the upper head. This design produces a very high rate of heat transfer within an unusually small volume.
In the unit shown above the tube side is stainless steel and is classified as ASME Nuclear class III, and the shell side is carbon steel, classified as ASME Sec VIII.
These heat exchangers have been provided as both an all welded construction and a bolted type construction, and have been supplied in both horizontal and vertical configurations. The design can easily be adapted to a variety of service requirements by the simple addition or removal of cooling coils.
