Introduction

Sight glasses and sight flow indicators are used in process systems to provide direct visual confirmation of flow in pressurized piping. In addition to indicating flow of process fluid, they allow the examination of the fluid for particulate content.

Options

Sight glasses and indicators are manufactured in different configurations. Some of these are:
  • inclusion of paddle wheels to allow visual monitoring of clear fluid flow
  • back-lighting by means of double-glass design to facilitate detection of fine particulate matter
  • leakage collection indicators - these are long-bodied sight glasses with large viewing windows and multiple tube inputs to permit detection of leakage from any of the input line systems. This configuration is ideal for monitoring the interspace of double seals (e.g. mechanical pump seals) from a remote location without depending upon instrumentation. By viewing the indicator it is known instantly if a pump seal is leaking.
Typical Applications

These process components are used in liquid or slurry service.

Examples are:
  • the placement of a sight glass downstream of a solid media vessel to monitor filter screen failure
  • installation in a sluicing line to verify resin transfer into ion exchange columns to replace expensive flow measurement instrumentation when precise flow measurement is not required
Numet Site Glasses

All sight glasses and leakage indicators are designed to ensure the pressure boundary integrity of the process equipment interface.
