Drain Traps

Nuclear Process Components

Drain traps are designed to perform two distinct functions:

  • to enable draining of liquid from a gas process system, i.e. liquid purge
  • to enable the removal of trapped gases from a liquid process system, i.e. gas release
Liquid Purge Drain Trap

Liquid purge drain traps are used to remove condensate from air receivers, remove moisture from process systems to reduce corrosion, and to maintain a fixed liquid level in process tanks. In general metal-to-metal seats are used in liquid applications for durability.

Gas Release Drain Trap

The gas release drain trap is used in liquid systems where the presence of pressurized gas is detrimental to the operation of process components, or where it could be dangerous (e.g. where the accumulated gas could be explosive). Also they are used to bleed evolved gas from process vessels and remove trapped air from a process system on startup. For gas service, soft elastomer seats are generally used to minimize gas loss.

Drain Trap Process

In both designs of drain trap a needle valve is actuated by a float mechanism. The difference between the two styles is in the orientation of the float mechanism. In the gas release drain trap the buoyancy force provided by the float is used to close the needle valve, while in the liquid purge drain traps the float opens the valve.

Numet Drain Traps

  • Designed to accept a variety of float mechanisms and needle valves to suit a wide range of process fluids and operating pressures.
  • Easily disassembled for service, or for replacement of the float mechanism.
  • Sealed by o-rings to ensure leak-tightness.
  • Body, float and needle sizes can be varied to suit the process application.
  • At the client’s request, drain traps can undergo full functional testing under actual operating conditions prior to shipment to the client.
